Under the guise of a volunteer fund: the SSU detained an enemy intelligence agent

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has detained a Russian intelligence agent in Dnipro, who operated under the cover of a volunteer fund.

After the arrest of his associates in January 2023, he went into hiding but recently switched to a backup communication channel with Russian special services and continued to carry out hostile tasks.

This marks the eighth agent from the espionage network in Dnipro exposed by the SSU.

To conceal his intelligence and subversive activities, the Russian agent used his status as a co-founder of a local public organization involved in volunteering. While acting undercover, he attempted to identify the locations of defense force headquarters deployed within the region.

Furthermore, the perpetrator provided the aggressor with information about the approximate quantity and types of military equipment transported by rail to the frontlines. He monitored the movement of Ukrainian military convoys from the office of the public organization, which was located near a railway junction.

Additionally, the Russian agent utilized his acquaintances, questioning them under fictitious pretexts to gather information about Ukrainian defenders.

Simultaneously, he tracked information regarding the consequences of enemy air raids on Dnipro, subsequently disclosing to the aggressor the locations of affected objects and the extent of the damage.

The reconnaissance information collected was used by the occupiers to prepare new and adjust repeated aerial attacks on the regional center.

During searches at the perpetrator's place of residence, law enforcement found a mobile phone with evidence of his correspondence with a representative of the Russian group.

Currently, the Security Service has informed the detainee of the suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed during wartime).

At the SSU's request, the court imposed a preventive measure of detention on him. The investigation is ongoing, and the offender could face a life sentence.

Comprehensive measures were carried out by the SSU officers in Dnipropetrovsk region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.
