Near Vinnytsia Lyceum No. 19, municipal service workers have installed "Berlin pillows," as reported by the Vinnytsia City Council.
The Department of Transportation and Urban Mobility states that these devices will be installed near educational institutions as a priority, especially with the start of the school year. "Berlin pillows" are designed to regulate the speed of passenger cars in areas where there is a potential danger of hitting pedestrians. They are convenient because they force passenger cars to slow down since their width requires private cars to brake and tilt to one side.
In other words, if public transport or emergency vehicles like ambulances are passing through, they don't need to slow down; they can simply pass between the "pillows." Additionally, these structures will not obstruct the movement of cyclists, as they can easily bypass them.
"Berlin pillows," unlike traditional speed bumps, do not cause damage to vehicles passing over them," says Andriy Sorokin, the director of the Department of Transportation and Urban Mobility of Vinnytsia.
(Note: "Berlin pillows" are a type of traffic calming measure used to reduce vehicle speeds near pedestrian areas.)
