On the night of May 5, 2023, the first heart transplant was performed at Odessa City Clinical Hospital No. 1. This was reported by the Odessa City Council.
This is already the third heart transplant operation in Odessa, with the two previous ones being carried out at City Hospital No. 10.
As before, the operation was performed by a team of doctors from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine's Institute of Heart led by leading cardio surgeon Boris Todurov.
The patient had been brought to the Jewish Hospital with severe head trauma. Doctors made every effort to save him, but unfortunately, the injuries were incompatible with life, and brain death was confirmed.
The patient's relatives showed a high level of civic consciousness and gave consent for the transplant, for which we express our boundless gratitude to them. Thus, four people were given a chance to save their lives, as the first organ retrieval of four organs was performed in Odessa.
A 59-year-old Odessa resident, who had suffered two heart attacks and urgently needed a transplant, received the donor heart.
Two donor kidneys and a liver were transported to Kyiv to save the lives of three other people.
We express our deep gratitude to Boris Mykhailovych Todurov and his team, as well as the doctors of Odessa City Clinical Hospital No. 1 for their high professionalism, dedication, and the patient's life saved.
The further development of transplantation in the city hospitals of Odessa provides an opportunity to continue saving lives.
