Dnipro region: Russian intelligence agent, who wanted to disrupt Ukrainian counter-offensive, detained

The Security Service of Ukraine has detained a Russian Federation agent who was planning to sabotage the railway in the Dnipropetrovsk region in order to disrupt the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This information was reported by the SBU's press service.

Counterintelligence of the Security Service conducted a multi-stage special operation in the front-line areas of the Dnipropetrovsk region. As a result of operational measures, another agent of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, also known as GRU, was exposed. The individual turned out to be an employee of a local station of "Ukrzaliznytsia." He was recruited by a personnel officer of Russian military intelligence at the beginning of this year.

The traitor collected information about railway routes for the transportation and unloading locations of Western military equipment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces involved in counteroffensive operations. The enemy agent also recorded the coordinates of railway stations and bridges through which the relocation of heavy weaponry and ammunition of the Ukrainian Defense Forces took place. He documented all these objects using his phone during work-related train trips.

The reconnaissance information was needed by the occupiers for conducting air strikes in the region. Additionally, the Russian invaders were considering "sabotage options" at Ukrzaliznytsia facilities with the involvement of the recruited agent. In this way, the aggressor planned to disrupt the supplies of fuel, weapons, and ammunition for the Ukrainian Defense Forces on the southeastern front.

During the searches, the agent was found in possession of the following items and they were confiscated:

- F-1 and RGD-5 grenades
- A carbine
- A large quantity of ammunition for firearms
- Smoke grenades

The "Ukrzaliznytsia" employee has been informed of the suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 (state treason committed in conditions of a state of war) and Part 1 of Article 263 (unlawful handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

He is currently in custody, and he faces the possibility of life imprisonment for his treason.
