The prosecutors of the Odessa Regional Prosecutor's Office have submitted an indictment to the court against an inspector from the customs clearance department at one of the customs checkpoints of the Odessa Customs. The indictment is related to the inspector's alleged demand and receipt of $1,200 in unlawful benefits for himself in exchange for influencing a decision made by an authorized state official (Article 369-2, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to the information on the website of the Odessa Regional Prosecutor's Office, the investigation revealed that the accused demanded a bribe from a representative of a charitable foundation to influence his colleague at another customs checkpoint. The purpose was to prevent customs employees from creating artificial obstacles during the customs clearance of humanitarian aid for Ukrainian defenders.
The accused valued his "services" at $500 to $700 for each vehicle carrying cargo. The representative of the foundation had to inform him in advance about the timing of passage and the list of cargo.
Law enforcement officers detained the customs inspector immediately after receiving the second part of the unlawful funds. Currently, at the request of the prosecutor, the accused has been suspended from his position.
The pre-trial investigation in the criminal case was conducted by the investigators of the State Bureau of Investigations (DBR) in Mykolaiv, with the operational support of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Odessa region.
Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent until their guilt is proven in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict.
