The decision to rename several streets, an alley, a square, and an embankment was made by the deputies during the session of the Cherkasy City Council on July 13, as reported by the city council's press service.
The streets and locations that received new names in the city of Cherkasy are as follows:
Volkova Street was renamed to Zahisnykiv Ukrainy Street (Defenders of Ukraine Street).
Haharina Street was renamed to Volodymyra Velykoho Street.
Hlyny Street was renamed to Dzhokhara Dudayeva Street.
Palokha Street was renamed to Panteliomona Kulisha Street.
Sierzhanta Smirnova Street was renamed to Zahisnykiv Azovstali Street (Defenders of Azovstal Street).
Promyslovy Provulok was renamed to Tyasminsky Provulok.
Dachnyi Uzviz was renamed to Zaton Uzviz (restoration of the historical name).
The square named after Sierzhant Smirnov was renamed to Zahisnykiv Ukrainy Square (Defenders of Ukraine Square).
"The Cherkasy city authorities continue to systematically work towards the Ukrainization of the names of urban toponyms. Soviet and pro-Russian names should disappear forever from the map of Cherkasy," stated Sergey Tyshchenko, the First Deputy Mayor and the Chairman of the Toponymic Commission.
