On August 10th, the High Council of Justice granted permission to detain Judge Ilya Lonsky of the Primorsky District Court in Odessa, who is suspected of corruption by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP).
The request for the judge's arrest was filed by the head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. It was mentioned in the request that the judge is suspected of attempting to bribe another judge in exchange for a favorable decision in an administrative case, as well as misappropriating part of the bribe.
"The High Council of Justice took into account the reasonable suspicion of Judge Lonsky I.V. committing a criminal offense, as well as the existence of risks that provide sufficient grounds to believe that the suspect may evade law enforcement and the court, exert illegal influence on witnesses, or otherwise obstruct the criminal proceedings," as stated in the announcement.
The case involves a bribe of $2,000 from a serviceman. The judge was informed of the suspicion at the beginning of August. An attorney acted as an intermediary, and this intermediary was exposed in June. The case is qualified under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 3 of Article 15, Part 3 of Article 369, and Part 2 of Article 190. The judge could face imprisonment for up to 8 years with property confiscation as a possible penalty.
