The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted Law No. 9431 changing the dates of state holidays. This was announced by Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak on his Telegram channel.
The purpose of the law is to "reject the Russian heritage", so the following holidays will now be celebrated on different dates:
- 25 December - Christmas (instead of 7 January);
- 15 July - Day of Ukrainian Statehood (instead of 28 July): commemorating the prominent statebuilder, St. Apostle Prince Volodymyr the Great of Kiev;
- 1 October - Day of the Defenders of Ukraine (instead of 14 October): in connection with Ukrainian military traditions and in honour of the Day of the Protection of the Holy Virgin.
This law will be signed after 28 July 2023, so this month the Day of Ukrainian Statehood will still be celebrated on 28 July.
The MP also summarised the votes by factions:
- Servant of the People - 175;
- European Solidarity - 19;
- Batkivshchyna - 13;
- Platform for Life and Peace - 0;
- For the Future - 5;
- Holos - 10;
- Trust - 10;
- Revival of Ukraine - 2;
- Non-party MPs - 7".
