The city of Chornomorsk in the Odessa region will maintain its beach ban this season due to the absence of wave breakers, preventing them from installing nets for swimming. The mayor of the city, Vasyl Huliaiev, announced this in a statement on May 24.
According to him, the organization of swimming areas in Odessa is under consideration because, unlike Chornomorsk, there are wave breakers in the coastal areas. However, the local authorities are seeking military assistance to create safe conditions for recreation.
"Even in peacetime, when we opened our beach, we, of course, conducted underwater inspections. How do we do it today? There are many questions. Maybe there is a mine somewhere, and we need to install nets. There are no wave breakers. It is impossible to install nets. Safety is the top priority," the mayor emphasized.
However, local media report that the swimming ban and "Caution, mines!" signs do not deter everyone. Some individuals come to the undeveloped beaches for sunbathing.
The central beaches of Odessa have special nets installed to protect against mines and dangerous objects. Lifeguards are also present. Whether the beaches will open for visitors and swimming will be announced later.
