On August 20th, at around 13:30, a report was received by the police on the emergency line 102 from concerned citizens that an object resembling a river anchor mine had been found in the water near one of the beaches in Odessa. The police informed people on the beach about the potential danger and offered them to evacuate to a safe distance. Experts from the State Emergency Service (DSNS) were called to the scene to inspect the coastal area of the sea.
It was emphasized once again in the report that the mine danger remains very high. Many mines were scattered in the sea by the enemy at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. River mines, which were brought by a major flood following the blowing up of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Station by Russian occupiers, could also end up in the sea. Therefore, beachgoers are reminded that it is dangerous to stay on unverified, unofficially opened beaches.
Later, in the same channel, the Forces of the South Defense posted a message confirming the completion of the inspection of the area of the suspected object. DSNS experts covered about 650 square meters underwater and did not find any dangerous objects.
It should be noted that earlier, the military criticized the opening of beaches for vacationers in Odessa. They noted, among other things, that there are no nets that could fully protect the beaches from drifting mines.
