As of mid-August, Ukrainian farmers have harvested 50.4 thousand tons of melon crops, which is 20.7% more than the projected harvest. This includes 38 thousand tons of watermelons and 12.4 thousand tons of cantaloupes.
The area from which melon crops have been harvested is currently 6,200 hectares, with an average yield of 81.5 hundredweight per hectare.
The highest melon production and yield as of August is in Vinnytsia region, where farmers have already harvested 12.6 thousand tons with a yield of 140 hundredweight per hectare, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.
Among the leaders in terms of melon crop areas are Odessa region with 1.3 thousand hectares, Poltava with 0.7 thousand hectares, Vinnytsia with 0.6 thousand hectares, and Dnipropetrovsk with 0.5 thousand hectares.
In Vinnytsia markets, melons are being sold for 75 UAH per kilogram, and watermelons range from 18 to 35 UAH per kilogram.
It's worth noting that due to the war and the occupation of Kherson region, there has been a shortage of watermelons in Ukraine since last year. Part of the region where melon crops were traditionally grown is still occupied. Additionally, the destruction of the Kakhovska Hydroelectric Station by the enemy on June 6th in Kherson region also affected watermelon yields. This resulted in the flooding of around 80 populated areas, including the city of Kherson, leading to evacuations by authorities and volunteers.
