Due to the detonation by the occupiers of the Kakhovskaya HPP in Dnipropetrovsk region, a mass plague of fish Ukraine news 07 Jun 2023 at 15:53

A massive fish die-off began in the village of Maryanske in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on June 7 due to the occupiers' destruction of the dam at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant and a sudden drop in the water level in the reservoir. President's Office Head Andriy Yermak reported this and shared a video of the event, stating, "Dnipropetrovsk region - a massive fish die-off due to the terrorist destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant by the Russians."

The video shows tens of thousands of fish stranded in shallow water. The Dnipropetrovsk Fish Protection Control confirmed this occurrence and reported, "On the Kakhovka reservoir in the village of Maryanske, Kryvyi Rih District, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, water biological resources, namely crucian carp, have been found due to the dropping water level. The crucian carp is concentrated in one location. No more fish were found during the inspection along the Kakhovka reservoir."

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine warned that the fish die-off in the Kakhovka reservoir has begun and cautioned against consuming such fish. They emphasized that dead or dying fish should not be collected for storage, cooking, or consumption, as no cooking method can make it safe. Such fish may contain disease-causing microorganisms, parasites, or hazardous chemicals. This was mentioned as one of the expected reasons for a deterioration in water quality in wells and open water bodies on the territories flooded as a result of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant dam explosion.

As a reminder, on June 6 at 2:50 AM, Russian forces detonated the structures of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in Kherson Oblast. As a result, about 80 populated areas, including the city of Kherson, are at risk of flooding. Authorities and volunteers have initiated the evacuation of the population from the affected areas.
