In the city of Hayvoron in Kirovohrad Oblast, it has been confirmed that a stray dog has rabies. Five people have been bitten, and they are advised to receive rabies vaccinations. This information was provided by the spokeswoman of the State Consumer Protection Service in the region, Natalia Shevchenko, to Suspilne.
According to Natalia Shevchenko, the decision regarding vaccination will be made in consultation with healthcare professionals: "The treatment is physically demanding and lengthy, spanning several months, but when a person is bitten by an infected animal, we strongly recommend vaccination."
A meeting of the local state antiepizootic commission will be held in Hayvoron. Among other things, they will identify the "dangerous zone," which includes the area adjacent to the location where the rabid dog was found. Free rabies vaccinations will be administered to all domestic dogs and cats in this area.
The dog was found near the Hayvoron Polytechnic College, and it was also spotted on Khmelnytsky Street, as reported by Roman Voluyko, the head of the Hayvoron City Council.
Rabies is an acute infectious disease that affects both animals and humans, caused by the neurotropic rabies virus. It is characterized by inflammation of the brain with rapid involvement of the central nervous system. Without timely preventive vaccinations and the delay of medical and veterinary care, rabies can be fatal for both humans and animals.
According to Natalia Shevchenko, in 2022, there have been 36 confirmed cases of rabies in cats, foxes, and dogs in the region, while there were 43 cases in 2021. In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, 13 cases of animal rabies have been confirmed this year. In the event of a bite from such an animal, vaccination is the only way to prevent infection.
