In Dnipropetrovsk region, an 11-year-old boy independently ordered "fly agaric" mushrooms over the Internet and poisoned himself with them. This information was reported by the Main Directorate of the State Food Safety Service of Dnipropetrovsk region.
After purchasing the "fly agaric" mushrooms, the child began to consume them in a dried and ground form.
An hour after consumption, the child exhibited the first symptoms, including hallucinations, dry mouth, vomiting, and dizziness.
The child's parents sought medical help three hours after the initial symptoms of poisoning appeared.
The child was hospitalized in the resuscitation department of KNP "DMKL No. 6" of DMR in a condition of moderate severity with the diagnosis of "poisoning by wild mushrooms." Currently, the child is undergoing treatment.
In total, in Dnipropetrovsk region for the year 2022, ten cases of poisoning by wild mushrooms were registered, affecting 12 people, including three children. One child died, who was eight years old. All patients consumed wild mushrooms, collected by themselves, in a boiled, fried, and/or preserved form. After seeking medical help, the affected individuals were primarily hospitalized in a serious or moderately severe condition.
The State Food Safety Service advises against consuming wild mushrooms as food altogether and recommends consuming artificially grown mushrooms like champignons, oyster mushrooms, which can be purchased at stationary retail stores.
