A woman selling counterfeit alcohol in a store in the village of Starostyne, Odessa region, has been arrested. The consumption of unknown alcohol led to the death of four individuals, while seven others remain in critical condition at the hospital. This information was reported by the police of the Odessa region.
The incident occurred on July 5th in the village of Starostyne. On that day, local residents started feeling unwell after consuming homemade alcohol purchased from a local store. Emergency medical personnel had to hospitalize them one by one.
"Three individuals died in the hospital, and the death of another man was confirmed at his place of residence. The preliminary cause of death for the citizens was the toxic effects and poisoning by chemical substances. Currently, seven people remain in critical condition," the statement reads.
The woman who sold the counterfeit alcohol was detained by law enforcement officers under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine on suspicion of selling illegally manufactured alcoholic beverages that led to poisoning and death.
As part of the ongoing investigation initiated by the police under Articles 115 and 204 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, a series of forensic examinations have been ordered.
The materials collected by the police, in accordance with the norms of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, have been transferred for further investigation to the territorial department of the Bureau of Economic Security.
