This weekend, the employees of Cherkasy Emergency Medical Service participated in the evacuation of children with special needs from Zaporizhia region who were in critical condition and required medical supervision. This information was shared by the Regional Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine of Cherkasy region.
The evacuation involved 4 drivers, 4 doctors, and 7 paramedics. Two vehicles were used for the operation: the "Sofia" emergency medical assistance bus and one mobile intensive care unit.
"Alongside us, a brigade from Zaporizhia Emergency Medical Service joined the evacuation effort. In total, 9 children aged between 4 and 7 years old were transported. Four of them were from the intensive care unit. One child was on a ventilator, and four other children required continuous oxygen support, medication, and specialized care during transportation. The children were transported from healthcare facilities in Zaporizhia region to similar institutions in Ternopil region," the medics explained.
This transportation was initiated by the Health Department of Zaporizhia Regional State Administration and was under the special control of the Ministry of Health.
Despite the journey lasting over 12 hours, all the children tolerated the transportation satisfactorily. Considering the number of patients, their critical condition, and the urgency of the evacuation, this was the first time such an operation was carried out by the emergency medical services in Ukraine.
Overall, the transportation took more than 28 hours for the employees of Cherkasy Emergency Medical Service. The total distance covered was 1910 km.
The young patients will continue their treatment in safer conditions, away from ongoing military operations and other potential threats that exist near the healthcare facilities where they were previously located.
