In exchange for the bribe, the individual proposed that the Ukrainian security officials halt their investigative actions and refrain from seizing his property within the framework of a criminal case being investigated by the SSU.
According to the SSU's press service:
– The employees of the Security Service immediately reported such an 'offer' to their superiors and devised an operational plan. This allowed for the documentation of the suspect's criminal actions. During the searches conducted at his residential and work addresses in the city of Reni, the full amount of the bribe was discovered.
Based on the materials of the case, the offender was identified as a local businessman and director of one of the logistics companies. He is a suspect in another criminal case being investigated by the SSU, which involves corruption schemes related to the export of Ukrainian agricultural products.
Based on the collected evidence, the SBU investigators informed the businessman of the suspicion against him under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (offering, promising, or giving an undue advantage to a public official).
The question of imposing pretrial detention as a preventive measure is currently being decided. The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime. The offender faces up to 8 years in prison with confiscation of property.
It is worth noting that the Security Service of Ukraine exposed Odessa officials who extorted bribes from representatives of domestic companies engaged in the export of Ukrainian grain. The organization of this scheme involves officials from the Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in the Odessa region and the state institution "Odessa Regional Phytosanitary Laboratory".
