Yuzhne City Council has announced the start of collecting proposals for renaming the city. This decision is driven by the Law of Ukraine "On Condemning and Prohibiting the Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Toponymy."
Currently, the name "Yuzhne" needs to be brought in line with the standards of the state language. Therefore, the Executive Committee of Yuzhne City Council, starting from July 7, 2023, initiates the collection of proposals from the population regarding a new name.
At first glance, the simplest option would be to rename Yuzhne to Pivdenne (which means "South" in Ukrainian), but there are already several settlements with the same name in Ukraine, including a city in the Kharkiv region.
The city council expects proposals from labor collectives of enterprises, institutions, organizations, community associations, trade union committees, and residents of Yuzhne regarding the renaming of the city by September 7.
Proposals can be submitted by official letter to the following address: 65481, Odessa region, Odessa district, Yuzhne city, Hryhorivskoho Desantu Avenue, 18, or by email to viddil_dilovodstva_ymr@ukr.net.
Yuzhne is a city in the Odessa district of the Odessa region. It serves as the administrative center of the Yuzhne urban community. The population is 33,000 as of 2019. The territory covers an area of 10 square kilometers. It is located approximately 47 kilometers away from the regional center and is accessible via the M28 highway.
