In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, meteorologists are predicting hot and dry weather. This could lead to the formation of locust infestations in fields and meadows. The State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection has provided recommendations to farmers in case of an increase in pest populations.
"At present, larval feeding is observed only in the pest's reserve areas (non-arable lands, ravines, fallow lands), and infestations in agricultural crops have not been detected. However, according to meteorological forecasts, hot and dry weather is expected in the future, which may lead to the formation of high-density locust populations in pastures, meadows, non-arable lands, forest strips, and adjacent crops such as sunflower, corn, vegetables, and other agricultural crops," the statement reads.
In case of detecting Italian locusts at a rate of 2-5 individuals per square meter or non-swarming locusts at a rate of 10-15 individuals per square meter on agricultural crops, it is recommended to apply chemical treatments.
"The methods of chemical treatment will depend on specific conditions. Overall treatments, border treatments (around crops), local treatments (in areas of high pest concentration, swarms) with insecticides according to the 'List of Pesticides and Agrochemicals Allowed for Use in Ukraine' are recommended," according to the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
It is also noted that local executive committee heads of rural and township councils, as well as beehive owners, must be informed three days in advance about the time and place of treatment (specify the name, degree, and duration of toxicity of the pesticide). Chemical treatments should be carried out in compliance with the regulations for the use of plant protection products, safety precautions, and sanitary rules when working with them.
