Poltava boxer Oleksandr Khizhnyak defeated Irish boxer Kellin Cassidy in the quarterfinals of the 3rd European Games. This was reported by the Poltava Regional Military Administration.
The "Tribuna" publication also reports that the Ukrainian secured victory in the first round by a split decision from the judges, with the second round going to the Irish representative.
In the third round, despite a knockdown by the Irish boxer, only one judge awarded the win to the Poltava region boxer with a score of 10:8.
Overall, athletes from the Poltava region have a history of achieving victories and medals at the 3rd European Games. On June 27th, Oleg Priymachov won in the Muay Thai (Thai boxing) competitions. He will meet an Italian opponent in the final in the 91 kg weight category.
On June 23rd, Poltava athletes secured two medals. Igor Trunov and Oleg Kukharik won a silver medal in the men's canoe-four 500m race. Another silver medal was earned by Lyudmila Luzan in the women's single canoe 200m distance race.
These athletes had previously won gold medals as well. Lyudmila Luzan, partnered with Valeriya Tereta, secured a gold medal in the women's canoe-double over 500m. Meanwhile, Igor Trunov and Oleg Kukharik were the first to cross the finish line in the men's canoe-double over 500m.
