Vinnytsia received a working visit from the Chairman of Ukrzaliznytsia, Yevhen Liaschenko, and a delegation from the Moldovan Railways led by CEO Oleg Tofilat. This was reported by the Vinnytsia Regional Military Administration.
The parties signed a Memorandum. It envisions the implementation of a project for the restoration of the railway corridor Valchinet – Oknitsa – Beltsy – Ungheni – Kishinev – Kainary. This railway passes through the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
The project was developed as part of the "Paths of Solidarity" initiative, supported by the European Commission, and it aims to develop alternative logistics routes.
"It should be noted that this event is significant for Vinnytsia, as well as for Ukraine as a whole. Our region ranks first in Ukraine in terms of the territory's transit coefficient and the branching of the railway network," said Serhiy Borzov. "The project's implementation is also an opportunity for the development of our agricultural producers."
Since Vinnytsia is an agrarian region, the project will help access important ports to deliver grain to other European countries. According to the Head of the Regional Military Administration, the structure of the region's exports has changed significantly: while previously, the main buyers of our agricultural products were primarily India and Egypt, now they are Balkan countries.
Oleg Tofilat, CEO of the Moldovan Railways, noted that the project's implementation is indeed a confident step for both states.
"For all of us, it is important to have transit corridors in the best possible condition as soon as possible. The better the infrastructure and connections, the more competitive the economies of our countries become. Thanks to the infrastructure restoration, the capacity of the section will be increased, train speed will be accelerated, and the quality of freight transportation will be improved. In addition, the project's implementation will strengthen the positions of our countries in the global economy," said Oleg Tofilat.
Incidentally, in November of last year, Ukraine and Moldova resumed passenger train service after a 24-year hiatus on the Kyiv-Chisinau route, passing through Vinnytsia.
