On May 17th, a presentation of Radomyr Mokryk's book "Bunt proti imperii" ("Rebellion against the Empire") took place at Library Branch No. 4 in Poltava. The book contains stories about Ukrainian "Sixtiers," young individuals who were shaping a new culture during the Khrushchev Thaw.
Yanina Barybina, a deputy of the Poltava Regional Council who organized this event, shared that it all began when she noticed Professor Yuriy Voloshin's enthusiasm for this book, which immediately piqued her interest. She stated, "Radomyr Mokryk readily agreed to come to Poltava for a presentation. I am grateful that the library on 141 Yevropeiska Street supported this initiative, as well as Poltava Pedagogical University, and the youth responded eagerly. Overall, we see that this book has become a bestseller in Ukraine, and people in Poltava were eagerly anticipating the author's visit. It's important for us to reach out to students and young people, especially during this war, and show that even in those difficult years of imperial chauvinistic Russia, there were courageous individuals who defended Ukrainian national interests, language, and fought for freedom and dignity."
The author himself believes that this book is an attempt to portray the "Sixtiers" as real people with their doubts, hesitations, intellectual courage, and brilliant talents. He wants to depict these young and talented people without the "bronze" coating that is often attributed to them in school textbooks. Furthermore, the author mentioned that the "Sixtiers" were far from being characterized by a "bronze" image.
The event was moderated by Dr. Yuri Voloshin, a professor of history, who noted that the book has been republished for the second time, which is a rare occurrence in contemporary academic literature.
During the meeting, all attendees had the opportunity to engage in casual conversations with the author, purchase the book, and obtain his autograph.
Additionally, during the presentation, there was an opportunity to make donations towards the purchase of a Mavic 3 quadcopter for the third assault brigade, which includes residents of Poltava who are actively pushing back the enemy.
