In Cherkasy, a recent successful bone marrow transplant was performed on a patient from Kharkiv, using cells from a non-relative but fully compatible donor. This information was provided by the press service of the Cherkasy Clinical Oncology Center.

The oncology center conducted low-resolution HLA typing, which initially concluded that the patient's daughter was not a suitable donor. However, when relatives matched at a lower resolution capability, further high-resolution HLA typing was conducted at the center to ensure that the donors were fully compatible in all aspects.

The donor for the bone marrow transplant was found in Spain.

"We examined the patient's daughter, but unfortunately, she was not a match. So, the patient's material was sent to the Ukrainian Bone Marrow Donor Registry and later to the International Bone Marrow Donor Bank," said Larisa Nogayeva, a hematologist at the regional diagnostic hematological center.

The laboratory center of the institution is accredited according to the requirements of DSTU EN ISO 15189:2015, "Medical laboratories - Requirements for quality and competence," and it conducts research that meets diagnostic needs according to clinical protocols and laboratory support for patient treatment. This is crucial as it provides the unique opportunity to perform all the necessary research in a single facility, which speeds up the work of healthcare professionals, patient treatment, and cost savings, as explained by the Cherkasy Clinical Oncology Center.

"This allows us to carry out a greater number of bone marrow transplants. It also enables us to accept patients with aplastic anemia from all over Ukraine. For them, having a donor is crucial because a transplant leads to a complete recovery for such patients. Therefore, people with this diagnosis can undergo examinations with their relatives to determine whether they are suitable donors," added Larisa.

Currently, the center is preparing two more patients for familial bone marrow transplants for whom cells from their relatives are a complete match.
