Sergiy from Kyiv now has a Vinnytsia heart beating in his chest. He became the first person to undergo a successful heart transplant at the Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Hospital named after Mykola Pirogov. The operation was performed by doctors from the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after Mykola Amosov and a team of transplantologists from the regional clinical hospital Pirogov. The Head of the Vinnytsia Regional State Administration, Sergiy Borzov, expressed gratitude for the cooperation to the Ukrainian cardiac surgeon and the Director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, Vasyl Lazoryshenets. He also had a conversation with the Kyiv resident whose heart transplantation essentially saved his life. This information is shared in Sergiy Borzov's Facebook post.
Sergiy, a resident of Kyiv, experienced shortness of breath for a long time but hoped it would resolve on its own. Until he was diagnosed with "dilations in cardiomyopathy" and had an aortic valve implanted. Last year, he received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. He felt unwell and had difficulty even walking. In essence, the operation was his only salvation. Now, he has received a heart from Vinnytsia and a chance for a healthy life.
The post also mentions that organ transplantation for patients is free of charge, with the state paying around 2 million hryvnias for each such transplantation.
Previously, we reported that in Cherkasy, a woman successfully received cells from a non-relative donor from Spain.
