Police, in collaboration with the fisheries patrol, are documenting the mass loss of aquatic resources due to a significant decrease in the water level in the Kakhovka Reservoir in the Kryvyi Rih district. This was reported by the National Police press service.

The mass loss of aquatic resources as a result of the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant being undermined by Russian military forces is being investigated within the framework of criminal proceedings opened under Part 1 of Article 441 (ecocide) and Part 1 of Article 438 (violation of laws and customs of war) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

"The police, the prosecutor's office, the fisheries patrol, environmental, and other relevant services are present at the site of this environmental disaster, documenting the consequences of ecocide, and assessing the extent of the damage to the environment," the statement says.

Law enforcement and the Ministry of Health are urging citizens not to consume fish found on the shore and to follow safety precautions.

As a reminder, the mass death of fish began in the village of Maryanske in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on June 7th due to the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant being undermined by occupiers and a sharp decrease in the water level in the reservoir. Videos appeared on the internet showing tens of thousands of fish left stranded in shallow waters.

Also, on June 6th, Russian forces from inside the Kherson region blew up the structures of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.
