On the night of July 2, 2023, Russian occupiers launched an attack on Ukraine using Iranian combat drones of the "Shahed" type and three cruise missiles of the "Kalibr" type. The missile attack was targeted at the regions of Odessa and Mykolaiv. The launches of the eight "Shahed" drones were carried out from the southeast direction, while the "Kalibr" missiles were launched from the Black Sea.
As dawn approached, increased activity of both tactical and strategic enemy aviation was observed. In the Black Sea, the number of missile carriers was increased to three, with two submarines on combat rotation and one additional surface vessel. The total salvo of "Kalibr" missiles increased to 16.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that all eight air targets, consisting of "Shahed" combat drones and three "Kalibr" cruise missiles, were destroyed by Ukrainian forces. At midnight over the Mykolaiv region, two "Shahed-136" combat drones were effectively neutralized.
This attack came after previous incidents of shelling with heavy artillery in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the use of "Kalibr" missiles and Iranian "Shahed" combat drones on June 26, and an attack with several shells in Marganetska Hromada, Nikopol District, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on July 1. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully repelled these attacks and downed multiple missiles and drones.
