In Odesa, the court sentenced an official who demanded 150,000 hryvnias from the wife of a fallen defender

The deputy commander of a military unit in Odessa has been found guilty of abuse of power. This information was reported by the State Bureau of Investigations.

In March 2022, the deputy commander of the military unit informed the wife of a deceased soldier that she and her children could receive financial assistance from the state amounting to 15 million hryvnias. He promised to assist with the paperwork and expedite the payment if she gave him a percentage of it, specifically 150,000 hryvnias.

The military serviceman was apprehended while receiving a bribe in the form of a percentage of the promised financial aid for the deceased soldier's family. The next day, he was informed of the suspicion of abusing his influence (Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

During the court hearing, the accused admitted his guilt and expressed remorse for his actions.

The Ismaili District Court of Odessa Region decided to sentence him to two years of confinement in a disciplinary battalion.

This case underscores the unacceptable nature of abuses in the disbursement of funds to families of deceased soldiers and emphasizes that such attempts by the leaders of military units will be relentlessly prosecuted.
