It is the 468th day of Russia's large-scale armed aggression against Ukraine. Here's a brief summary of the most significant events of the day:
Overnight, the Russian Federation launched a massive rocket attack on Ukraine, firing 35 cruise missiles. However, all of them were intercepted and destroyed by our defenders, as reported by the General Staff.
Over the past day, the enemy conducted 4 missile strikes and 64 aerial attacks, launching 64 artillery shell attacks on the positions of our troops and civilian areas. Unfortunately, in addition to the destruction of infrastructure, civilians have also suffered.
In the early hours of June 6, at 02:50, Russian forces detonated the structures of the Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Station (HES) in the Kherson region. As a result, about 80 settlements, including the city of Kherson, are at risk of flooding. Authorities and volunteers have initiated the evacuation of the population from hazardous areas.
The destruction of the Kakhovska HES was reported in the South Operational Command. Later, Ukrhydroenergo clarified that the machine room was destroyed and is not subject to repair. Ukrainian authorities and the military believe that the Russians caused all this damage to impede Ukraine's counteroffensive.
However, President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that this would not affect the actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Approximately 80 populated areas are currently in the flooded zone. The right bank, where the land is lower, is most affected.
Regions have expressed readiness to help Kherson. Vinnytsia is ready to accommodate residents from the affected areas, as reported by Serhiy Morgunov, the head of Vinnytsia. An emergency meeting of the Interregional Coordination Humanitarian Headquarters was held to address this issue, and all available resources will be used to assist the affected population.
Odessa region has the capacity to accommodate 3,291 people in compact living areas in a very short time. The placement of people in educational institutions and private sectors is currently being worked out in an operational mode. The evacuation, shelter, and primary assistance are being closely coordinated with colleagues from the Kherson Regional Military Administration, civil organizations, and international funds.
A consolidated unit of State Emergency Service personnel from Dnipropetrovsk arrived in the Kherson region to assist with the evacuation. Nearly 100 emergency responders are aiding in evacuating residents from the streets and buildings flooded due to the detonation of the Kakhovska HES by occupiers. To support these specialists, 37 units of equipment have been deployed, according to Serhiy Lysak, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration. He also mentioned that police officers from Dnipropetrovsk are on-site, totaling approximately 150 people.
